YESTERDAY

The Beatles - Once Upon A Time

Photographs by Astrid Kirchherr   Forthcoming Title

and Max Scheler

In 1964 Astrid Kirchherr and Max Scheler travelled from Hamburg to England to photograph The Beatles as they prepared to star in their first feature film, A Hard Day’s Night. Astrid’s close friendship with the group, since the early Hamburg days, allowed for unrivalled access and a collection of photographs, rarely seen before, of rare intimacy and warmth. They capture the Fab Four in private moments during filming, as well as very public moments when confronted with their own fame – on set with director Richard Lester, signing autographs for screaming girls, quietly strumming guitars or trying to find some down-time for a quiet cup of tea. The effect of their success is also recorded in a number of stunning documentary photographs taken on the streets of Liverpool. These show a city in the centre of the Merseybeat tornado, where every kid wants a guitar, every guitarist wants to be in a band, and every band wants to be The Beatles.

Yesterday: The Beatles Once Upon A Time is a fascinating record of the world’s first and greatest supergroup. The book is an amazing archive, summing up not only a momentous period in The Beatles’ career, but also the inspirational effect of the Liverpool music scene’s early 60s explosion.
